Police Evict Pro-Palestine Students From the Brussels Free University

Although the protest was peaceful, some people were beaten and strangled by officers during the eviction.
On Tuesday, Belgian police evicted students who had occupied a building on the campus of the Free University of Brussels (ULB) to protest the Zionist offensive against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The eviction operation began at 6:30 AM and ended about two hours later, according to what the protesters reported through social media. About forty students, however, remained at the doors of the building, monitored by the police.
“I woke up hearing the sound of doors being broken down. Some people were beaten and strangled by the police. During the eviction, computers and phones were broken. Then they took us all to the auditorium, where the police checked our identities,” said one of the students.
In early May, several dozen students occupied a building on the ULB campus in a protest tolerated by the university. Among other demands, they initially required that the university suspend a colloquium in which the former Israeli ambassador to France, Elie Barnavi, was expected to participate.
The academic center held the conference on June 3, although ULB authorities had to move it to an auditorium off-campus and the debate took place under heavy security measures.
On June 18, ULB rector Annemie Schaus asked the students to vacate the occupied building, indicating that the evolution of the movement no longer corresponded “to the interests that motivated it.”
While all this was happening, Israel continued its offensive against the Palestinians in Gaza, where over 495,000 people are at risk of experiencing a catastrophic food shortage.
Since October 7, 2023, Israeli occupation forces have killed 37,658 Palestinians and injured 86,237 people. The majority of the victims are women and children, according to United Nations agencies.
